Chapter 15

Mira

I appreciated the effort Chase was putting into our weekend getaway. I mean, this place was phenomenal. With the fishing rods, the river right off the porch and the woods drowning out the rest of the world. It was paradise in a bottle, and I could have lived in a place like this for the rest of my life. I toed off my shoes and slipped off my socks. Rolling up my pants, I tucked my hair behind my ears. I heard Chase rumbling around in the cabin, probably getting things ready and putting stuff where it needed to be.

But me?

I was about to jump into this river.

“Geronimo!”

Into the water I went with a splash and began laughing immediately. I splashed around, kicking at the water with my feet and dipping my hands into the rushing, cool liquid. I cupped my hands and gathered some of the clear water against my skin. I brought it to my mouth, drinking the naturally-filtered goodness as it slid down my throat. I drank a stomach-full before splashing some in my face. Was it possible for water to taste sweet?

Because this water tasted phenomenal.

I couldn’t resist the childlike fun. I jumped up on the rocks and slid around, jumping from smooth top to smooth top. I twirled around like a ballerina and stumbled back into the water, catching myself before I fell over and was swept away by the rushing current. Fish jumped around me, causing me to giggle and throw my head back. They surrounded me, one after another. And it felt like I could practically reach out and catch them with my bare hands.

I tried a couple times, actually. And one time, I almost had it.

“Mira!”

I looked up at the porch and saw Chase standing there. He waved at me and I smiled up at him as the high noon sunlight poured through the trees. But, I wasn’t sweating. The cool water tempered at my knees was keeping me from overheating as the sharp rays pierced the canopy of trees.

“Ready to fish?” he asked.

“I’m coming!” I exclaimed.

I heard him laughing as I stumbled to get out of the river. I left my shoes and socks on the embankment, rushing inside and making my way out the back door. I found Chase setting up the poles with tackle and worms, stabbing them onto the hooks for us to use to catch fish.

Wrapping my arms around his waist, I pressed my cheek to his back.

“Thank you so much for this,” I whispered.

He turned around in my arms and held me close, my cheek falling to his chest.

“Anything for you,” he said softly.

“You know, we kind of owe it to the general store owner to catch some fish for him. You know, since he helped us so much,” I said.

I peeked up at Chase and listened to him chuckle.

“You just want a chance to convince him you’re a professional fisherman,” he said. “I knew it!”

“I honestly don’t know why I didn’t think of it before,” I said.
